Are Ticks Dangerous?

In the United States, there are 90 species of ticks—a handful of which can carry and transmit harmful diseases. Ticks are able to spread diseases through their bites. They pass along bacteria, parasites, and viruses—most of which result in flu-like symptoms. Diseases caused by ticks include Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Heartland virus, Colorado tick fever, Babesiosis, and more.

Signs of a tick-borne disease include:

  • Neck stiffness
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • A red spot or rash near the bite site
  • Weakness
  • Sore joints or muscles
  • Chills
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Nausea

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, first seek medical attention. Then, call the professionals at proof. pest control. Our highly trained pest control team will provide a thorough, complimentary inspection of your home and a detailed treatment plan.

What Should I Do if I Find a Tick in My Home?

The absolute best thing to do if you find a tick in your home is to pick it up with toilet paper and flush it down the toilet. This is because their bodies are quite hard, which means they are likely to survive being stepped on. You don’t want to run the risk of failing to kill a tick and allowing it to latch onto you or your beloved pets.

If you find one biting you, don’t use your fingers to try and remove it. Use a pair of tweezers to remove the tick and then flush it down the commode.

Once you are safe, we recommend calling in a team of experts to inspect your home. While tick infestations are rare, we want to do everything we can to be sure you are out of harm's way.

Where Do Ticks Like to Hide?

Only a few species of ticks can survive indoors. These ticks often enter a home by attaching to humans or animals while they are outside. They like to stay latched to humans or dogs in order to maintain access to a blood source. Ticks are often found in areas of the body such as the groin, underarms, inside ears, in hair, inside belly buttons, and behind knees.

While some species of ticks can live indoors, most of them prefer to stay outdoors.

You may find ticks in these areas of your yard:

  • Overgrown shrubs
  • Piles of wood
  • Storage sheds
  • Doghouses
  • High grassy areas
  • Piles of leaves
  • Stone walls
  • Bird feeders
